About the Conference
The goal of this conference is to promote awareness and understanding of serious mental illnesses and to promote family involvement in the Mental Health System. Everyone is invited to receive current and hopeful information from health professionals, to hear stories of recovery and obtain support to navigate the path of recovery.
The keynote and introduction will be by Vicki Rogers and Jehannine Austin, PhD. Below, you can find more information about the presenter.
Introduction by Vicki Rogers – Mood Disorders Association of BC. Vicki Rogers founded MDA of BC in 1983 for spousal and family support. She also continues to teach English, ESL, and students with learning disabilities and special needs, part-time, in School District 43. Vicki is passionate about promoting acceptance, literacy and empowering people to partner with their mental health care providers.
Genetics and Mental Illness: What’s New? What’s Next? - Jehannine Austin, PhD, Genetic Counsellor. Jehannine is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Medical Genetics, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Translational Psychiatric Genomics. She is also a board certified genetic counselor, and Graduate Advisor for the Genetic Counseling MSc program. Her research work aims to use her clinical genetics perspective to develop and evaluate interventions to improve outcomes for people with psychiatric disorders and their family members. For example she and her team have just completed the first ever randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of genetic counseling for people with serious mental illness.
